Official Smoking Policy | ||||||||||

All areas in UNC Charlotte's residential facilities are designated smoke free spaces. This includes all areas within highrise rooms, suites, and apartments as well as public areas, such as lobbies, stairwells, fire escapes, elevators, bathrooms, laundry rooms, hallways, and floor and building lounges. All persons at the University share the responsibility of adhering to and enforcing the smoking policy. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has a vital interest in maintaining a healthy and safe environment for its students, faculty, staff and visitors, while respecting individual choice about smoking. Consistent with these concerns and with North Carolina law, a Policy which establishes restrictions on smoking on University Property and provides procedures for accommodating the preferences of both smokers and nonsmokers has been developed. That Policy is Policy Statement #68. To read and understand the entire Policy Statement, please click here. You will find "definitions" of smoking which clearly explain just what is meant by words such as "Smoking," "Building," "University Property," "University Vehicle," and so on. The official Policy details the restrictions concerning smoking which involve each of these words and it is important to know those restrictions. There are Designated Smoking Areas for those who choose to smoke, and those areas are defined. They will be marked by proper signage. See Section III of Policy #68. All Designated Smoking Areas are exterior to University buildings, which include all residence halls. Residence halls will have defined Designated Smoking Areas that are convenient to the residents of those buildings. Residents who may be smokers will be expected to use those Designated Smoking Areas. Violations of the Policy may subject a member of the campus community to disciplinary action, so it is necessary to understand that the Policy will be enforced, and it applies to students, staff, and faculty. The Policy also states "Cooperation and consideration between smokers and nonsmokers is necessary to ensure the successful implementation of this Policy. Effective implementation of this Policy depends upon the courtesy, respect, and cooperation of all members of the University community."
