Less Time = Water Saved
Take shorter showers.
Every Other Day
Try showering every other day unless you've exercised strenuously.
Hand-Washing
When washing your hands, use only enough water to wet your hands, then turn off the faucet and lather up. Then turn the faucet back on to rinse off the soap. Every drop counts!
Fix That Leak
Report leaking faucets and showers - contact Facilities at (704) 687-7502 or go online to www.housing.uncc.edu and click on the link to fill out a "Facilities Work Request Form."
Clean Teeth With Half The Water
Turn off faucet while actually brushing your teeth, only turning on to rinse your toothbrush and mouth. Saves three gallons each day!
In The Laundry Room
Only do laundry when you have a full load, or share a machine with your roommate if you need to wash less than a full load.
In The Bathroom
Put a plastic bottle or a plastic bag weighted with pebbles and filled with water in your toilet tank. Displacing water in this manner allows you to use less water with each flush. Saves 5 to 10 gallons a day.
Shave More Conservatively
Turn off the water while shaving. Fill the bottom of the sink with a few inches of water to rinse your razor. Saves three gallons each day.
Dish Duty
When washing dishes (apartment kitchens or community kitchens), use the least amount of detergent possible. This minimizes rinse water needed. Saves 50 to 150 gallons a month.
Thirst Breaks
Keep a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator. This beats the wasteful habit of running tap water to cool it for drinking. Saves 200 to 300 gallons a month.
