The Department of Housing and Residence Life believes that living on campus at UNC Charlotte is a “Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience.” By living on campus, students are making an investment in their education. Research shows that students living on campus earn higher grades, are more likely to continue in college, and are more likely to graduate within four years. These national studies have proven true as we look at the data collected on our campus.
A major contributor to the success of campus residents is the interaction with our residence hall staff. These live-in staff members, in addition to the members of our team that work in the main office, provide a web of support for the students who live in the residence halls. This support has proven invaluable as students (especially freshmen) transition to campus and work to integrate themselves into the UNC Charlotte community.
In addition to the staff connections listed above, campus residents have additional academic support and social networks not available to commuters. Highlighted below are two important models upon which we base many of our educational programs for residents.
The Connections Model is a complementary concept to the University’s long-time efforts in creating a framework for intentional and diverse opportunities for students to connect with the University. By emphasizing Connections as a primary programmatic focus, we expect to encourage Residence Coordinators and Resident Advisors to serve as catalysts, aiding students in the development of sustainable and supportive campus relationships.
Additionally, the Residential Freshman Curriculum was developed as a method to focus programming towards freshman-specific needs and interests. The curriculum guides programming efforts into four areas of college student development: academic success, personal development, active citizenship, and social connectedness and will be put in place across campus to help guide staff as they work to meet the needs of residential freshmen.
