Position Announcement

The UNC Charlotte Department of Housing and Residence Life seeks interested students to apply for the Graduate Hall Advisor (GHA) position. We encourage you to apply if you are interested in working in residence life during your graduate studies. Special consideration is given to individuals with previous housing experience. Only individuals enrolled in a doctoral or graduate program at UNC Charlotte are eligible.

Preferred Qualifications for Position

  • Previous experience leading students in a residential setting
  • Ability to fully participate in GHA and RA Training (early July - mid August)
  • Enrollment in Charlotte's Educational Leadership graduate program
  • Academic year schedule that allows for business and after hours availability

The Department of Housing and Residence Life is composed of educators committed to creating communities that enhance student success through the academic, personal and social development of residential students, and to providing students with a variety of services within living environments that are clean, safe and comfortable. We support approximately 6,000 students in 15 on-campus residential communities.

The department maintains a total of 7 Graduate Hall Advisor roles with 5 of those being In-Hall GHAs and 2 being Administrative GHAs who support Student Staff Training and Development or Leadership functions. 

Position Overview

The Graduate Hall Advisor (GHA) position is a 10-month, part-time (approximately 20 hours per week), live-in, graduate position within the Department of Housing and Residence Life. The Graduate Hall Advisor is responsible for providing administrative support to an assigned residential community housing 300-750 students or to department-wide Residence Life programs and services such as staff training, staff recruitment, student leadership programs, and academic initiatives. 

General responsibilities of the GHA include supervision and advising of undergraduate students, assisting in the coordination of residence life, operational and assignment functions; and performing other administrative functions as needed.

GHAs are expected to work 20 hours per week in coordination with their supervisor. Graduate Hall Advisors are supervised by a Residence Education Coordinator or Residence Life Leadership Team member. GHAs participate in an emergency, on-call duty rotation and are required to live on campus.

In-Hall GHAs (5 positions)

In-Hall Responsibilities

  • Assist in the oversight of the daily operations of their assigned residential community and the supervision of Resident Advisors as directed by their supervisor, the Residence Education Coordinator (REC);
  • Provide administrative support to assigned areas of residence life management, which may include: facilitating student conduct or care meetings, advising residential leadership council, mediating roommate conflicts, facilitating programming, and assisting residents with personal and academic concerns;
  • Provide administrative support to assigned areas of operational and assignment management, as directed by the supervisor.  Areas of responsibility may include coordination of residence hall check-in, occupancy/key management, room changes, occupancy checks, health and safety inspections, recruitment events, and residence hall closing.
  • Assist with student staff or student leader meeting agenda development and meeting facilitation, as needed.

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Participate in emergency and crisis response via an on-call rotation to provide support to half of the residential population;
  • Participate in weekly Residence Life staff meetings and professional development sessions;
  • Participate in weekly individual meetings with supervisor;
  • Serve on departmental committees and project groups;
  • Participate in departmental processes including but not limited to staff recruitment, selection, training, and development. 
  • Responsible for other duties as directed by the supervisor and/or Residence Life Leadership members.

GHA for Student Staff Training and Development (1 position)

General Responsibilities

  • Assist in the coordination and assessment of student staff training processes and development opportunities as directed by their supervisor, the Training and Development Specialist;
  • Conduct research on national best practices and other information related to assigned projects and programs;
  • Serve as a member of the Student Staff Training and Development Committee and the Student Staff Recruitment and Selection Committee;
  • Serve as the primary advisor to the student staff advisory committee which provides additional engagement opportunities in trainings and provides general feedback on the student staff role;
  • Provide administrative support to assigned areas of residence life management, which may include but is not limited to: facilitating student conduct or care meetings, mediating roommate conflicts, facilitating programming, advising residential student leadership groups, and assisting residents with personal and academic concerns.

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Participate in weekly Residence Life staff meetings and professional developments;
  • Participate in weekly individual meetings with supervisor;

  • Responsible for other duties as directed by the supervisor and/or Residence Life Leadership members.

GHA for Student Leadership (1 position)

General Responsibilities

  • Assist in the coordination of student leadership programs as directed by their supervisor, the Assistant Director for Leadership Programs;
  • Serve as a primary advisor to a residential student leadership organization;
  • Attend RSA and NRHH meetings as directed by their supervisor;
  • Assist with the development of student leadership initiatives including the coordination of Residential Leadership Councils;
  • Provide administrative support to assigned areas of residence life management, which may include but is not limited to: facilitating student conduct or care meetings, mediating roommate conflicts, facilitating programming, and assisting residents with personal and academic concerns.

Departmental Responsibilities
